Slow Computing, Digital Civics and Portfolio Project

 Slow Computing & Digital Civics

Slow Computing:
- Cultural shift towards slowing down life's pace
- Computing is deeply imbedded in our lives
- Slow computing VS Calm technology
    - calm tech promotes moments of reflection and mental rest. The info is presented passively and it's usually in our poriferas.
- Some Design: meditative bodily introspection
-Fast Technology: well-defined task, efficient, easy to use

Reflection:
Most companies are focus on quick profits, fast technology. Slow technology cares more about the users mental wellbeing. As UX designers we need to design for slowness, solitude and mental rest. How do we change the functionalities and design to help the users not get overwhelmed? We could avoid numbers based goals and information. We should reward users for taking their time and

"Living Technology Lives", people are always on their phones and rely on it heavily. It has become an assumption that everyone has a smartphone and is online 24/7. This can be very damaging on people and the pressure they feel by this expectation. We need to be more mindful of our usage and what we expect from others. This reminds me of the always sunny in Philadelphia episode about Dennis taking a mental health day. He doesn't go to work so he can relieve his stress. He rents a car... but has to get an app to unlock and use the car. Then he goes to get coffee...but to pay he has to download an app to pay. Then he forgets his phone and gets locked out of his car. Theses are all ridiculous designs that assume that everyone has a smart phone and if they don't the products/services become inaccessible to them. I think it is becoming seemingly impossible to take a break from technology because it is becoming an essential element to be a part of society.

Project reflection:
One struggle my teammates and I are having is regarding communication. We all speak different primary languages. I try to use concise language which I think confuses them due to over complication. Whereas they will communicate things using more simple language which to me doesn’t illustrate the full picture of what they are envisioning. This causes confusion and inconsistency’s in our design/project. Words are not enough to convey an idea (reference pictures can be useful)

Digital Civics:
4 civic goods
1.Education 2.Health and Wellbeing 3.Social Care 4.Public Participation in Democratic Process

Things that are not thought of in a bigger perspective that is also user centred it can cause problems
- Create solutions not separately but as integral to its conception
- Place-based self sustaining solutions (build the infrastructure that can be taken by the community and has easy maintain
-Examples:
    - Park Learn: tech and education to give students tours in nature with embedded info
    - What Learner: Using whatapps to let people play games together that would give the researchers information on what the people saw for the future so they could prioritize
-Intuit: sensitive health data, niche but impactful problem (HIV). Works with organizations that help these people and focuses on sustainable and
